Eden Alternative Introduces Changes to the Long-term Care Industry - Workshop Scheduled

Contact: Kristine Watson, 510-534-8540, ext. 355

Oakland – The Eden Alternative announces an important opportunity for Californians to learn about the culture change movement that is currently sweeping the long-term care industry. With the support of Lumetra, the California Quality Improvement Organization (QIO), Elder Care Alliance and Mercy Retirement Center, The Eden Alternative is conducting a 3-day workshop April 20-22, 2005 at Mercy Center in Burlingame, California.

The workshop will offer participants information about the transformation of long-term care from an institutional model to a person-directed model. Participants will earn their Eden Associate Certification and be qualified to teach and implement the principles and practices of the Eden Alternative™. According to officials, over 7,000 people have gone through the training and the results have been quite encouraging. The Associate Training teaches the Ten Principles of the Eden Alternative and gives specific suggestions and guidelines for putting them into practice.

This workshop will provide participants not only with an overview of the current movement sweeping across this country, but also will give them in depth information to implement The Eden Alternative. They will also receive many resources and tools that will help guide them in a journey of organizational culture change, no matter which model they choose. Nancy Fox, Executive Director of The Eden Alternative, states, “It is an honor and a pleasure to be working with these fine organizations to bring the good news of culture change to the Elders and caregivers of California. We know now that the places where Elders live should be much more like home and much less like hospitals. We have the knowledge, experience and tools to help California nursing homes through this challenging process, and are eager to share that with them.”

The Eden Alternative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Elders and their caregivers by transforming the communities in which they live and work. Founded in 1991, by Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard-educated physician and Board Certified Geriatrician, the Eden Alternative now claims over 275 registered homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. The staff and management of these homes continue to work towards meaningful cultural change through ongoing training and a continued dedication to making life better for those in their care.

Lumetra is a San Francisco-based, independent, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety and integrity of healthcare for providers and consumers. Since 1984, Lumetra has been contracted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to be the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for California. For more information about Lumetra, please visit www.lumetra.com.
